Medical Surgical Department
The Medical/Surgical Unit at Mayo Regional Hospital provides acute and rehabilitative nursing care services to a variety of patients, from pediatrics to geriatrics. Admissions include orthopedic, surgical and medical patients. Rehabilitative services include wound care, infusion therapy, end-of-life care and post-surgical recovery.
Last year the Med/Surg unit received over 1250 admissions. The average daily patient census was 13, and the average length of stay was 3.3 days.
Med/Surg is located on Mayo's second floor and has a mix of semiprivate and private rooms, with 18 total beds.
The unit is staffed by a mixture of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Nurses Aides. Our patient care centers on the Patient Care Partners model, where RNs, LPNs and CNAs partner in teams to provide patient care.
Special features of the unit include two negative pressure rooms for special precaution patients, Pyxis medication administration, a central nursing station with computerized order entry, and Internet access. In 2006 a bedside Peripheral Inserted Central Catheter program was started. Specially trained nurses insert a long IV catheter in the arm and thread it into the large vein just before the heart. In 2007 we added an Ultrasound machine to assist in this process. We have seen our insertion accuracy rate go to 99-100%. In 2008, two rooms are being remodeled to provide more specialized care to those patients who are in the dying process.
Mayo's Med/Surg unit is characterized by a warm, friendly and caring atmosphere that stresses individual attention for all patients. This approach is reflected in outstanding patient satisfaction survey results.
The Med/Surg unit also participates in nursing education by providing preceptorships for students at nearby Husson University and the University of Maine at Orono and Augusta. We also support clinical preceptorships for Certified Nursing Assistance and Unit Coordinators.
