Mayo Regional Hospital's Rehabilitation Services Department has been an integral part of the hospital's inpatient and outpatient services since Mayo opened in 1978. This busy department performs over 12,000 physical therapy procedures annually.
Rehab Services provides physical therapy support for three orthopaedic surgeons on Mayo Regional's medical staff, including rehabilitation for total joint replacement surgery and ongoing outpatient management for other orthopaedic surgical procedures.
Rehab Services also works with three general surgeons at Mayo on patients' wound care and post-surgical mobilization needs, and provides physical therapy for those patients affected by debilitating diseases of the vascular and neurological systems.
Mayo's physical therapy providers are involved in patient assessments for extended outpatient care, and coordination of discharge planning with home health service providers and area nursing homes. The department collaborates with WorkWISE, Mayo Regional's occupational health service, to provide physical therapy services for area employers.
Physical therapy services are conveniently located on Mayo's first floor, in the Mayo Resource Center at the rear of the hospital. The department includes a separate waiting/reception area, a hydrotherapy treatment room, and four treatment stations.
Mayo has recently added occupational therapy services. Occupational therapy assesses the performance of activities of daily living, including work, leisure and social interactions. Evaluation includes testing motor skills, performance patterns, and the ability to process and apply those skills.
